How to Make $5000 a Month: 10 Foolproof Tips and Strategies Revealed

When you’re new to freelance writing, the idea of making $5000 a month might seem impossible, but let me assure you, it’s absolutely within your reach. In fact, you can earn $100,000 a year and more as a freelance copywriter!

With the right strategies, determination, and a dash of creativity, you can break free from the 9-to-5 grind and create a thriving freelance writing business that brings in a steady income of $5000 or more each month. 

In fact, once you get going, you’ll see that $5000 is only the beginning. It’s easy to make double or triple that — and without having to leave home or wherever the fuck you like. 

Imagine waking up every morning not to the blaring sound of an alarm clock but to the sweet melody of freedom. Picture yourself sipping your fave coffee, sitting comfortably wherever you please, and diving into writing projects that excite and inspire you. As a freelance writer earning $5000 a month, this can be your reality.

But how do you get there? How much do you need to write? How can you maximise and monetise? And what do you need to do each month to see that money hitting your account? Let’s take a look, shall we?

Anatomy of a $5,000 blog writing month

I remember being OVERFUCKINGJOYED when I landed a gig paying $50 for a blog. “This is it!” I thought. “I’ve made it!” And even though it wasn’t that much, I was chuffed because I was earning money as a freelance writer.

Now, realistically, I could only manage two of these blogs daily. I was new. I was slow. And two articles seemed like a shit ton. So even if they had a constant supply of work available, I’d only earn $500 a week, or $600 if I pulled 6-day weeks. Urgh! No thanks.

So, at $500 a week, I was looking at $2000 per month.

Hmm. Not bad. But not great.

As you can see, you need to up your rates to stand a chance of meeting your $5000 goal.

So once I was confident in my skills, I left my $50 blog writing gig and chased bigger and better clients.

And that’s how to make $5000 a month and so much more!

Here’s what a $5000 month could look like if you’re doing blogs and a mixture of copywriting.

When I reached the $5000 monthly mark, I was charging around $150 per blog. And I’d become faster and more efficient as a writer, meaning that although I still wrote two blogs daily, I shaved 2 or 3 hours off the time I’d spend writing. So, each hour I was working, I was earning waaay more.

Each month, I’d write around 26 blogs and earn $3900. Here’s a rundown of my contracts:

  • 1 x 8 blogs monthly
  • 1 x 6 blogs monthly
  • 3 x 4 blogs monthly

So, blogs accounted for 13 days of work.

And here are my other gigs at the time:

  • A HUGE monthly newsletter that took me a looong day to complete. And I totes under quoted for it. Rate = $250.
  • A package of 4 emails monthly. Rate = $400

The grand total was $4550.

In addition to this, I would have bits and bobs of copywriting, like web pages or social media ads, which would bring my monthly total to around $5k for 16 to 18 days of work.

In other words, WAY MORE money than a full-time job, and only working around 4 days a week.


And now, imagine if your rates are double or triple that! You can work far less and earn way more. You only need a handful of clients to cross that magical $5k mark.

The great thing is that you get MUCH faster. Speed is of the essence! It’s critical to work on your craft so that being a writer becomes easier, faster, and more productive. I can easily write 4 to 6 blogs daily, sometimes more. And that’s 1000 words each. Can you see how that adds up?

It’s easy to cross the $5k, $10k, or even higher mark in not much time at all. So what do you need to do to get there? Here are 10 of my fave strategies:

1. Set your income goal and timeline

If you want to make $5000 a month freelance writing, one of the most important things you can do is set a clear income goal and the timeline for achieving it. Why? Because my friend documented goals are more likely to come to fruition. Fact. 

Start by determining how many clients you need to reach your income goal and your average rate. Then, create a timeline for achieving your goal, like landing your first client within a month and increasing your income.

Remember that filling your schedule with low-paying writing work takes away free time to market to high-paying clients. So, although you’ll likely need to accept lower-paying clients in the beginning to build your rep and portfolio, focus on finding and landing high-paying clients ASAP. Keep your eyes on the prize!

2. Choose a niche

First things first. As you learn how to make $5000 a month as a freelance writer, you need to consider your niche, a.k.a. your area of expertise.

Now, at first, you may want to take any and all writing gigs to get your foot in the door. But as a specialist, you’ll command more money for your work. So, niche down as soon as poss.

Now, it’s crucial to pick a niche that you’re passionate about and has a demand for your skills. Choosing a niche helps you stand out in a crowded market and attract high-paying clients willing to pay for your specialised knowledge.

Here are some tips for picking a niche:

  • Identify your strengths and interests: What topics do you enjoy writing about? What skills do you possess that could be valuable to a particular industry or audience?
  • Research the market: Look for growing industries or markets that require content creation. Focus on niches that offer higher rates to maximise your earning potential. Often lucrative niches include technology, healthcare, finance, or lifestyle.
  • Check out the competition: See what other writers offer in your chosen niche and how to differentiate yourself. Can you provide a unique perspective or voice that sets you apart?
  • Network with industry professionals: Attend conferences, join online forums, and connect with people in your chosen niche to learn more about their needs and pain points.
  • Continually educate yourself: Keep up with industry trends and learn new skills to remain relevant and valuable to your clients.

Taking these steps should lead you to a niche that not only aligns with your interests but also demands your copywriting skills and expertise. This helps you attract high-paying clients and reach that $5k income goal.

3. Build a professional website

By establishing a robust online presence through a profesh website, you can highlight your expertise and attract juicy clients.

Your website should be visually appealing, easy to navigate, and highlight your portfolio, testimonials, and services. Use high-quality images and graphics to capture the reader’s attention and make a lasting impression.

Use keywords relevant to your niche to improve search engine optimisation (SEO) and attract more traffic to your site. Ensure your website copy is clear and concise, telling potential clients what you can do for them and why you’re the best person for the job. Remember that every word you write demonstrates your abilities, so take the time to do a good job!

Remember to include a call to action, encouraging visitors to contact you for more information or to hire you straight off the bat. 

Now, you can use your LinkedIn profile in the same way, but by building a solid website, you position yourself as a professional committed to their career.

4. Demonstrate your track record

People love proof! So showcase your writing and blogging triumphs and position yourself as a sought-after writer. That way, you’ll catch the attention of high-paying clients. You know, the ones actively searching for writers who can demonstrate a proven track record of generating comments, shares, traffic, and clicks.

So, if you have posts that have done well, flaunt them! Your prospects will be impressed, and it’ll help you command top rates. 

But what if you haven’t achieved big wins yet? Don’t worry. There’s still a path to success. Start considering guest blogging opportunities, even if they’re unpaid. WTF!? They won’t directly help your income goals, but they will help you gain exposure and build a track record. 

Even if you only have one post that’s been shared and commented on, it’s a fantastic starting point for impressing potential clients. It demonstrates that you can create engaging content that resonates with readers and drives meaningful interactions.

5. Get better clients

It’s shit settling for low-paying blogging gigs that barely cover your coffee addiction. So, as soon as possible, you need to leave the world of ordinary clients behind and step into the realm of extraordinary opportunities. We’re talking about the crème de la crème of blogging clients who value your skills and are willing to invest in your expertise.

Having a client who needs a single $30 blog post monthly won’t help toward your $5k monthly goal. But a 4-blogs monthly kinda client at $200 a pop? Yep, now you’re talking! 

So set your sights higher and say goodbye to the race to the bottom. Instead of scouring Craigslist and content mills, shift your focus to quality clients who understand the true value of well-crafted blog posts. Explore annual lists from respected sources like Inc. or your local business journal’s Book of Lists to discover companies with a real marketing budget and potential for long-term partnerships.

You should also network with intent. When you forge connections with industry influencers, fellow freelancers, and potential clients who appreciate the power of exceptional writing, you’ll be onto a winner. Attend conferences, participate in online communities, and engage in meaningful conversations demonstrating your expertise. Building a network of like-minded professionals opens doors to exciting opportunities and referrals from those who believe in your talent.

And it’s crucial to value your worth. Set your rates confidently and unapologetically. Remember, quality clients understand that exceptional content comes at a price. Don’t settle for less when you have the skills and talent to command top dollar.

6. Think big, or at least long!

It’s time to think beyond the confines of bite-sized content and get into long-form content.

When I started freelance writing, clients wanted 300- to 700-word blog posts. Well, that doesn’t cut it anymore, as Google now prefers longer posts. We’re talking 1200-3500 words a pop. 

And the great thing is longer posts are worth more money. 

Just think, if a 1000-word article is worth $200 to you, then a 2000-word jobbie is worth double! Duh! But it’s double the money with not that much extra effort. Even though the word count’s double, you don’t generally need twice the research. I find that a 2000-word article takes me nowhere near as long as two of 1000 words.

Sounds good, right? But how do you find people who want these long, detailed posts? You need to keep your ear to the ground and research the folks who are publishing them. 

To identify potential clients needing long-form articles, explore site ranking charts and leverage analytics tools to discover the prominent players in your niche. 

Many websites and publications publish ranking charts featuring top blogs within specific industries. These charts can give you valuable insights into which blogs are influential, have a large readership, and prioritise in-depth content. Explore these charts to identify potential clients who value and invest in long-form articles.

You can also take advantage of powerful analytics tools like SEMRush to uncover the big players in your niche. These tools provide comprehensive data on website traffic, organic search rankings, and keywords, allowing you to identify blogs that attract a significant audience. 

Once you’ve identified the top-ranking blogs in your niche, delve deeper into their content. Look for gaps or areas where they may be lacking in comprehensive, long-form articles. This could signal that they need quality content to engage their audience further. By pinpointing these content gaps, you can tailor your pitches to showcase how your long-form writing expertise can fill those voids.

Boom! You’ve landed some big payers!

7. Connect with digital marketing agencies

Digital marketing agencies are always on the lookout for talented freelance writers to help with their content creation needs. Collaborating with these agencies can provide you with a steady stream of clients and diverse writing opportunities. 

Start by researching digital marketing agencies that specialise in your niche or industries you’re passionate about. Look for agencies with a strong online presence, positive client reviews, and a portfolio of successful campaigns. Compile a list of potential agencies that align with your writing style and expertise.

You have to be selective to find the ones that pay well. I’ve been offered all sorts of fees from $150 up to $700 for a 1000-word article. So, do your due diligence!

Once you’ve identified target agencies, craft a compelling pitch highlighting your unique skills and experience. Tailor your pitch to show how your writing can support their clients’ digital marketing objectives. Emphasize your ability to create engaging, SEO-friendly content that drives traffic, generates leads, and increases conversions. Include relevant writing samples and demonstrate your knowledge of their industry or niche.

Connecting with these agencies can open the door to a wide range of writing opportunities and potential long-term clients, so give it a go!

8. Get retainers

Securing retainer agreements with clients is crucial for your sustainable success as a freelance writer. Wait, what?

A retainer is a contractual agreement between a freelancer and a client that establishes an ongoing working relationship for a specified period. In this arrangement, the client agrees to pay the freelancer a predetermined amount regularly, typically monthly, to secure the freelancer’s availability and services.

Essentially, a retainer allows the client to retain your services exclusively or on a priority basis. It ensures you set aside time and resources to work on projects for that client and them alone.

A retainer agreement usually outlines the terms of the retainer, including the scope of work, deliverables, payment terms, and duration.

By entering into a retainer agreement, you benefit from the financial security of a consistent income stream, reduced marketing efforts, and the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of your client’s brand and needs. And your clients gain access to your expertise, dedicated attention, and timely delivery of work.

As you can see, they’re advantageous for everyone involved.

Building long-term client relationships also fosters trust, loyalty, and satisfaction. By consistently delivering high-quality work, meeting deadlines, and exceeding expectations, you’ll establish yourself as a valuable asset to their team.

Satisfied clients are more likely to continue working with you, refer you to others, and provide testimonials that can attract yet more new clients to your freelance business. Woohoo!

9. Upsell like a boss

When it comes to freelancing, upselling is a skill that can take your business to the next level. 

It’s far easier and cheaper to sell services to an existing client than to find a new client. Fact. And by upselling, you can figure out how to make $5000 a month consistently.

So, what is upselling? It’s all about maximising your value and increasing your income by offering additional services or upgrades to your existing clients. Upselling like a boss requires finesse, confidence, and a deep understanding of your clients’ needs and goals.

One of the keys to successful upselling is building solid relationships with your clients. Take the time to listen to their feedback, understand their pain points, and identify opportunities to provide additional value. By demonstrating your expertise and delivering exceptional results, you’ll earn their trust and position yourself as a reliable source for their ongoing needs.

When it comes to upselling, timing is everything. Look for opportunities to introduce additional services or upgrades when your client is experiencing success or has expressed interest in expanding their project. 

Perhaps you have a blogging client, and you’ve noticed their competitors have shiny case studies at the ready. This is your opportunity to upsell your client. So, be proactive in suggesting ways to enhance their existing work or take it to the next level. We’re talking premium content packages, advanced marketing strategies, or comprehensive project management services. What do they need, and what can you provide?

Show your clients how your additional services will address their needs, solve their problems, or help them achieve their goals. Paint a clear picture of the value you’ll provide and how it aligns with their long-term vision. All these fine deets make the upsell irresistible and showcase your commitment to their success.

But remember, upselling isn’t about pushing unnecessary services onto your clients. It’s about genuinely helping them achieve their desired outcomes while expanding your business. By mastering the art of upselling, you’ll increase your revenue, strengthen your client relationships, and position yourself as a trusted advisor in your field. 

Clients come to me and ask how they can improve their marketing or appear as thought leaders. THEY ask ME what I’d recommend. And I give them my honest opinion about how we can get them where they want to be. And that’s priceless.

10. Outsource whenever you can

Let’s face it: as a freelance writer, you wear many hats. But trying to do it all on your own can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stretched thin. Outsourcing tasks like editing, research, or administrative work can free up your time to focus on more profitable tasks.

Imagine this: You’re no longer drowning in tedious editing or endless research. You’ve smartly delegated those tasks to skilled professionals who can handle them with ease. By outsourcing these time-consuming tasks, you reclaim valuable time to focus on what you do best – writing compelling content and wooing clients.
